Easter Promotions: How do you compare?

As Easter quickly approaches, how are you looking to promote your product(s)? How do you outshine the competition?

Brand View is conducting a weekly analysis to review who will be on promotion this Easter. This report is built by looking at promotions from now until the weeks shortly after the Easter holiday. See who will be on promotion this Easter, the types of promotion and level of discount they will be offering.

As we approach Easter there has been an increase in the amount of products on promotion – Tesco have seen the largest increase with an additional 125 lines on offer.

Compared with the data from the previous year, the most noticeable change in promotional offerings is a shift to ‘Buy 3 for’ offers from ‘Buy 2 for’ offers. The overall level of discount is slightly less driven by Waitrose who have reduced their level of discount from 33% to 25%.

Brand View March Price Index

Brand View has seen prices continue to rise in recent months with the Brand View index moving from 109 in January to 112 in March.*

Recent price increases have occurred due to the continued rise of BWS and Grocery lines. BWS has seen price rises and a reduction of promotions, VAT increases and minimum pricing per unit. Grocery lines have come from continued price rises across the market – but which lines have seen the most change?

The chart below details a selection of areas around the store that have seen price changes over the last two years with areas such as Spirits, Flour and Sugar seeing price increases significantly above that of the Brand View Index.

Time to increase your range?

Brand View Strategic Pricing provides an intuitive overview of on-shelf pricing to help you review your overall price position and product range. Here’s just a couple of ways that our current clients are using the analysis.

Analysing Promotional Effectiveness

A Butters and Spreads brand saw a large increase in sales during a promotion but none of this translated into on-going sales. By using the Brand View Pricing Piano, they discovered the reason for this was that the brand had been discounted too greatly, putting the product in the same price band as budget own label SKUs and away from their key consumer segments.

New Listings Opportunity

Using the Brand View Pricing Ladder, a drinks manufacturer identified a significant gap in product range with only 1L and 2L bottles sold. As a result, the client gained new listings of a 1.5L pack – providing a new offering in the market and filling the existing range and price gap. These products are now listed across the multiples and form a key part of the client’s business.

Minimum Price on Spirits – How will you be impacted?

Brand View Insights provides industry-leading analysis on the effect of key market changes on prices and promotions for your categories, your customers and your competitors. We’ve analysed the impact of the proposed minimum pricing legislation on the Spirits sector to produce this report.

“David Cameron’s coalition is to press ahead with plans to introduce a minimum price for alcohol in England and Wales to combat binge drinking.”
Financial Times, 4th March 2012

The government, which is due in the next few weeks to publish its alcohol strategy, has agreed to set a minimum price on alcohol, indicated at around 40p–50p per unit, in all supermarkets. Brand View not only tracks the shelf and volume price of alcoholic products but also captures the price per (alcohol) unit. We’ve reviewed the lines that are currently sold below 45p per unit to understand how pricing in Spirits may be affected by this change.
