Grocery price index up for January

The Brand View Index for January has just been released. Read on to find where prices sit after Christmas…

Brand View Index measures the shelf price of more than 35,000 FMCG products over the last three and a half years in Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. The analysis includes all items that have been stocked since July 2008 and which remain in stock today, to ensure an accurate measure of inflation.

As we enter 2012, the core index sits at 109% – up 4.3% on the previous year. Prices had been dropping steadily since the beginning of September 2011, driven largely by the price war campaigns of Asda, Sainsbury’s and Tesco, and promotions in the run up to Christmas. Having reached their lowest point by 1st December, prices had already started to rise before the end of 2011. Split by retailer, the index reveals that this recent upward movement has been driven by Asda. The only retailer to have seen a noticeable increase in prices, Asda’s prices have risen by 1.6 index points in the last month, whilst prices for Tesco and Sainsbury’s have continued to fall up to the New Year. Whilst having the highest retailer index at 110% Waitrose’s prices have remained the most constant, sitting within 1 index point since July 2011.

Who’s is going to be promoting this Christmas?

It’s hopefully not the only thing you have on your Christmas list but if knowing which of your competitors are promoting is something you want to find out over the Christmas period then Brand View has just the thing.

Using Brand View Promotional History you can set your date range to run a report for a period in the future (for instance, the Christmas holidays) to show you which manufacturers are running promotions today that are set to continue into the new year. Using this report in this way will also give you a detailed breakdown of the type of promotion and depth of cut your competitors are employing, allowing you to determine when and how to most effectively counter-promote your own product.

In addition to running the report, you can set up a Brand View Scheduled Export to deliver a daily or weekly report to update you on any new promotions that are introduced throughout the holidays. So even when you turn your attention to enjoying the other aspects of the Christmas holidays, you won’t miss a thing happening in your category.

A fresh look at promotions at this year’s IGD Convention

If you fancy getting a fresh perspective on promotional activity happening across all categories then you’ll be interested in Brand View’s new Volume on Deal and Depth of Cut by Category Report.

The report measures the number of SKUs on promotion across Grocery, Health & Beauty, Beers, Wines & Spirits, and Household categories for Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. Categories are ranked in order of the Volume on Deal (the percentage of SKUs on promotion) as well as displaying the Depth of Cut (actual price reduction off the base price of the product). So you can see instantly which categories are being promoted the most, the deepest, and by which retailers. Here’s a little sneak preview:

As part of Brand View’s sponsorship of the IGD Convention 2011, being held this Tuesday at the Lancaster Hotel in London, we’ll be handing out the full Excel report on a USB stick, available for all delegates to collect from our stand (situated in the Westbourne Suite). It will first-come, first-served, so make sure you get yours!

If you’re not attending the event, don’t worry, you can still have access to Brand View’s Volume on Deal and Depth of Cut by Category Report, just call us on 0844 357 99 70.

IGD Convention 2011 – less than two weeks to go

It’s been an exceptionally warm end to September, and regardless of what the weather decides to do next week, October should prove to be just as heated within Brand View’s Offices, as we hotly anticipate the IGD Convention 2011 – now less than two weeks away.

Being held at the Lancaster London hotel on Tuesday 11th October, the Convention will be inviting Leaders from across the entire UK grocery industry to swap notes, discuss priorities and plan new initiatives.

As proud sponsors of this sell-out event, Brand View will be there on the day and will have a stand situated in the Westbourne Suite. If you’re attending, make sure you come and say hi, as we’ll be imparting our latest analysis on Volume on Deal across all categories, including a special report for you to take away.

If you’re not going to be at the IGD Convention then you can still have access to Brand View’s Volume on Deal by Catgeory Report, which we’ll be releasing via email shortly after the event.
